ARE BLACKS JINXED?
Michael Ewetuga

Color is a matter of preference and what color people prefer is their taste. If you want to
buy a car or paint your house or buy shoes, you get to choose your color. Not so the
color of your skin; that choice was made for you.
If your parents were both black then of course you’d be black and white if both are white
and mixed if one is white and the other black. I wonder why people born of mixed
parents are not gray. My art teacher taught me in high school that if you mixed white and
black together you get the color gray.
I wonder why whoever gave the black people black was thinking of and white people are
certainly not white. Anyway, that is not of much importance here. For the purposes of
identification we all know who black people are.
I am a black man from Nigeria in Africa, the continent that is referred to as the Dark
Continent, why it is so described I am yet to find out. That also is not of paramount
importance here.
What I am interested in is what is wrong with being black?
African countries were colonized by the white people who started leaving in the 50s and
60s. I was told by my history teacher that the white people were reluctant to give Nigeria
her independence on the ground that we were not matured enough to rule ourselves,
sometimes some of us wonder if they were not right after all.
Superiority or otherwise of a race is determined these days by how advanced that race
is technologically. There’s no black nation as far as I know that is technologically
developed.
In America, you spend your time educating people about your ways of life back home
because they are still being taught that Africans live in jungles with wild animals. One of
my slogans when talking to my friends is if you want to see animals go to the zoo, if you
can find one. We are not even great animal lovers, so some of the zoos are not even
worth going to.
Sometimes though I wonder if the trip to the zoo is necessary. Walking on some of the
streets of Africa gives you the feelings that you’re in a zoo. Who else but animals would
drive against the traffic? Who else but an animal would have oil and still import oil. Who
else but an animal would go and keep money abroad while his people live in abject
poverty. Who else but an animal would build hospitals, watch them go into total state of
disrepair, watch his health sector suffer from brain drain and then turn around and go
abroad for medical attention? Who else but an animal would build universities and
watch the lecturers go abroad to be warehouse associates and his medical and legal
professionals turn to cab drivers and qualified nurses become CNAs and then turn
around and send his kids abroad to get education where some of his lecturers are now
lecturing.
Who but an animal would see all the roads in his country turn to big holes and killing
his citizens and then turn around and say he wants to sit in the security council of the
United Nations.
Who but an animal would tell his people that the economy is improving while prices of
goods and services are skyrocketing?
Maybe they don’t need to go to the zoo after all.
There are white third world countries I wonder if another term should not be used for
black third world countries.
You tend to think maybe we are like that because we are Africans.
But who but an animal would think he has to go to jail to become a man? The black
people here in America are not worried about going to jail. That is because they are
Americans. I bet you they would think twice about going to jail in Nigeria or some other
African countries or should I say any third world countries where people don’t give a
damn about inmates, real or political criminals.
It is time we started looking at ourselves as a race and move forward. We cannot and
should not continue to blame the whites for our problems. We should stop thinking
anyone owes us anything because the reality is that no one does. We should stop
counting how many people of our color made a difference. The only reason why we
count them is because they are not few. The first this, the first that, after that first then
what? The whites don't count because they see advancement as a matter of course and
Blacks doing something news worthy is like an upset in a game of soccer. Let us go the
Japanese and Chinese ways and move forward instead of resorting to acts that are
degrading to our race
The color black is a good color and the color of my skin is beautiful whatever you call it.
African leaders should get their acts together and stop being bunch of irresponsible
animals and make us proud. I am not insulting anyone, I am stating a fact. I know we
are intelligent, at least some are, I wonder if they are in the minority though. I know we
can turn things around if we stop being thieves and put the interest of our countries and
our continent and our race above all other considerations.
We should make blacks in Diasporas feel proud of their heritage. We owe it to them,
after selling them off as slaves. Black people everywhere need to stop fighting the white
man and instead turn his attention to his black brother who is responsible for enslaving
him in the first place, because most slaves were sold by the black man to the white
man. It is the Africans that should pay reparation and it is the duty of Africans to make
that continent one blacks in diasporas would look at one day and say “I wanna go
home”.
Let’s stop wondering if something is wrong with our color.
Lots that one could say about the ills of Africa due largely to its irresponsible leaders but
it is kind of tight now for me in terms of time.
I want to say thanks to the editorial board of the Nigeria village square for allowing me to
air my views on their site, you guys are doing a great job and thanks for keeping us
informed about Africa in general and Nigeria in particular.
