FIRST, HEAL THYSELF
Michael Ewetuga
A lot has been happening in Nigeria and I have not been able to comment on them
because a lot has been happening in my life as well which practically took me away
from my number one passion, writing.
Yar Adua was elected the president of Nigeria, amidst protests and allegations of
elections rigging. People have been urging governments the world over, including
America, not to recognize Yar Adua’s presidency. The irony of it is that I was watching
Hillary Clinton on TV the other day and she accused the Bushes’ administration of
election rigging. I did not notice any strike both times Bush was sworn in although a
documentary claimed that Bushes inauguration was the most protested in the USA.
Which country would Americans urge not to recognize their government in the event of
rigging?
We have to strike though and beg our colonial masters not to recognize our
government, typical of Africans, maybe we are just more conscious of our rights than
Americans, or maybe it’s the poverty. I understand the strike was called off without any
sort of gain with regard to its objectives. Makes you wonder why strike in the first
instance, a strategy that has been seen to be worthless except that it gives some
unscrupulous elements the opportunity to steal and maim.
I am happy that Yar Adua is president, now one can talk about his presidency without
someone accusing one of tribalism because just as some fools see color some
super fools see nothing but ethnicity a situation that makes me not to say much under
Obasanjo and since there are always people ready to take him to the cleaners,
always ready to insult and never objective there was no need to join the chorus, that is
the job of chorus singers and I am not one. No government is good, none of them is
perfect, politicians are liars and anyone who is genuinely serious about making a
change will know that our approach, the noise making approach will not take us
anywhere.
I am also happy that Obasanjo handed over the reign of government to Yar Adua,
which brings me to the topic of my article today, the hypocritical nature of man. Look at
most of the people we regard as heroes and look at whatever argument they proffer
for any of their actions, the right or wrong of such arguments depend on what part side
of the coin you’re looking at. I wish one of the critics would become president one day,
we shall all see if they are better, we’ll see if they will not give preferential treatments
to their friends and family members.
Of all God’s creation man is the fool and he’s a fool because he sits around in this
world not knowing his role in nature, he is full of himself and he thinks he is what he’s
not. He goes about with his head held high in ignorance which he thinks is
knowledge and he walks around thinking he is the best thing to happen to the world.
He has no other ambition but power and material acquisitions; he thinks he is better
than other fellow men because of his material possession. He thinks he is better
because of his houses, his cars, his clothes and his education. What kind of a man
builds a 52 room house, save billions of dollars in a Swiss account while there is
poverty and agony around him.
Man is intolerant, when someone does anything that is contrary to his beliefs he
labels such other people, he thinks he is better when he views himself as being more
religious or spiritual than another person, he thinks he is superior when he is
blessed with children and another is barren, he thinks he is the man of the moment
when he is educated than another person and he thinks he is more of a man when he
is heterosexual and another person is gay.
He fights unnecessary wars because he feels he needs to show his superiority, he
cares less about the poor and the hungry because without the poor and the hungry he
would have no one to oppress with his wealth, he spends billions of money in
whatever currency to prosecute war but will not spend a dime to alleviate the
sufferings of the less endowed. If he is not a fool then I am yet to see one.
I was watching the TV yesterday of a pastor that used to preach against gays, his
church was full and he wined and dined with the high and mighty, he was
photographed with president Bush. Then disaster struck, he found out that his friend
was gay and he made a U turn, now he wonders why people are labeled and rejected.
He claimed that he knows his friend quite well and he doesn’t understand why such a
man could be sent to hell fire, because according to him, the man is highly spiritual.
He challenged his congregation to show him in the bible where God condemned
homosexuality.
His congregation being human also made a u turn, they deserted his church probably
wondering where he got his new message from; it probably wasn’t from God because
he must have preached with vigor to them that God abhors homosexuality. They
probably thought the devil must have taken over his mind. He could no longer
maintain the property, he moved to another location, renting accommodation for his
church on service days. Some gays started attending his church and described him
as their hero. He changed his mind because he discovered that his friend was gay,
what if his friend was not gay? Because of his friend he is ready to interpret the bible
according to his whims and caprices. He was insensitive to gays because he didn’t
know he has a friend that was gay. What was his belief when he was preaching
against gay? He asked his congregation to show him where Jesus condemned any
sinner, the prostitutes, the tax collectors etc, did he suddenly discovered that area of
the bible?
I wonder why people must force their beliefs on anyone in the first instance. This
episode shows that pastors preach to their congregations according to their own
beliefs regardless of what the bible says, if you visit www.CNN.com. You will see the
tale of two priests one gay the other straight and how they both argued vigorously in
support of their stands.
This pastor was wrong when he sought to show that Jesus did not condemned
anyone because he did condemned the Pharisees and the Sadducees and enjoined
those with him not to be hypocritical like them. He also condemned the action of the
rich man who went home sad because Jesus asked him to follow him, Jesus
asserted at that point that it will be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a
needle than for a rich man to see heaven, yet pastors preach prosperity. These
pastors are rich aren’t they?
When the pastor was preaching against gay he must have closed his eyes to that
area of the bible that enjoined people not to judge for the ounce they used in judging
others shall be used to judge them. He must have not read the bible when he said
God did not condemn the act of sleeping with people of the same sex as one; the
bible actually did in Leviticus.
No man is better than the other man and no man should be the determinant of who
goes to heaven or hell, that is God’s prerogative and it has been said that his ways
are not ours. No man should kill in the name of God because since God gave life he
is the only one that is qualified to take it; he should be the judge as to whether or not a
life needs taken.
But no, man must play God and help him in cleansing this sinful world. When he his
blessed with money he thinks he is God himself, forgetting that his years on earth are
numbered, for him one day, just like the bible said, the fool and his money will soon
be parted.
When he rides an expensive car he thinks people with cheap cars should get out of
his way when he’s cruising down the streets. When he lives in an affluent
neighborhood he thinks people in the slumps should be tied together and burnt
together with whatever property they think they have and I have heard this view
expressed. If he’s putting on expensive clothes, shoes and jewelries he thinks he is
untouchable.
What shall it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul has no meaning to
him; he would rather gain the world and lose his soul if he has any. Money is the root
of all evil meaningless to him because he got his wealth in the first instance with the
help of the devil.
People themselves has been brainwashed to promote money to God’s position and
that is what they worshipped. There are women who will not date a man because he
is broke regardless of his conduct, good name is better than silver and gold is Greek
to such women, and of course there are men that wouldn’t date a broke woman either.
There are women who have been treated like slut because they cannot stand up for
themselves, standing up means losing the privileges and respect money brings to
them outside despite being treated worse than an animal by their “boss friend or
boss husband”
There are also men who have lost their respect and dignity because the woman is the
one caring for the family.
How can food go down to your belly and stay there when delicious food is before you
but is preceded by words that even slaves cannot stomach? What is the money a man
is giving you when he has neither love nor affection towards you? Sometimes his
behavior towards you depicts, if adequately analyzed, hatred.
We are all hypocrites and all of us are only interested in things that could take us to
that level where others envy us. We all choose money above love every now and then,
we all ask “what is he/she bringing to the table” it doesn’t matter if he brings all the
evil in this world provided money is included.
The bible said God looked down to see if there’s any righteous man in this world,
there was none, not one. That is the story of this world, that is how it was and that is
how it is and that is how it will continue to be so long as it is inhabited by man.
Wickedness, evil, inequality, nepotism, and all other ism in this world will continue to
exist and the only time we shout against them is when it is done to us. Let us check
ourselves, let us look into our own minds, let us take stock of all that we have done
and that we continue to do and let us turn away from our own evils, it’s a matter of
removing the log from our eyes before attempting to remove the specks from others. If
we were with Jesus when he said “he without sin cast the first stone” would we have
qualified to cast?
