MORALS, WHAT MORALS?

As a young boy growing up, my parents were bent on making good Christians out of us. We went to
church, Sunday school, revival, the whole nine yards.
Several biblical stories were used to knock into our very beings the commands of God according to that
religion. The stories were made simple so our young minds can get a good grip of the essence. I did,
whether or not I consider it practical was something I did not ruminate over till adulthood.
I remember reading “my book of bible story stories”. The book was quite colorful with lots of photos and
I imagine any kid of my age would love the book. I have my favorites of the stories, such as the story of
Lot and his family, Jonah in the belly of the shark, Moses in the basket, Joseph being sold by his
brothers, and Jesus and the three wise men.
The reason for this piece however is not to recount what I read in my book of bible stories but to use it
to illustrate a point and in illustrating the point I will use the story of the prostitute.
Jesus was not very fond of the Pharisees and Sadducees because he primarily saw them as
hypocrites who, although not clean, expect everybody to be clean and deceiving the people by exhibiting
their holiness, praying by the side of the road so people can see them.
The Pharisees and Sadducees made no bone of the fact that the feeling was mutual, they did not like
Jesus and are always trying to get him to say something that was regarded then as a heresy. They
asked him a couple of questions, such as “should pay taxes to Caesar?” Jesus was always ready for
them and their questions, so he asked them whose head was on the money, Caesar’s, they answered.
Well, “give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and unto God what’s God’s”
The story of the prostitute emanated as a test by this hypocrites. Prostitution was a very grave offence
and attracts the death penalty in those days. Anyone caught prostituting was stoned to death.
Instead of stoning this particular prostitute to death they brought her to Jesus in what turned out to be
her lucky day.
“This woman is a prostitute” they informed Jesus, “should we stone her to death”. Jesus must have
been amused at this question and he took his time in answering and when he did answer the
hypocrites went away with their heads bowed in shame. “He without sin cast the first stone” was Jesus’
reply to the question.
It amuses me when people preach morals or claim to hold themselves to higher moral standard. Wise
men and women know that there is no such thing as higher standard, it is nothing but a ploy to cover
the eyes of the gullible with lies, it is a deception, a fraud.
Politicians are the modern day Pharisees and Sadducees, they claim to be morally upright, they parade
their families on national television as if they are the most upright species of the human race, but
sometimes the fact that they are heroes with clay feet do come out and their hypocrisies are exposed.
We know of a former president who, despite being married to a beautiful woman, got a blow job from
an employee. There was a governor who was patronizing a prostitute, a senator who was soliciting sex
in a public toilet from an undercover police officer and now a governor who refused to appoint a senator
on the merit demanding money to appoint the highest bidder to that position.
There are many words in the dictionary to cover their shame, instead of stealing money they
misappropriate funds, lie is misinformation, extortion is gratification and the jail time for some of the
crimes committed and that are being committed by politician are ridiculously insignificant, taking into
consideration that someone that steals something worth five hundred dollars could end up with a
felony on his/her record.
We love to see ourselves as angels and act like we have the prerogative of choosing what morals
obligations to keep and throw away. We also like to believe our immorality is nothing when compared
to others.
If you want to use the bible as your point of reference, it says there are no big and small sins. A man
that lies is subject to the same condemnation as the man that kills. It is therefore not a surprise when
establishing law that our progenitors stayed away from legislating morals as crimes because what is
immoral in a particular community might be perfectly moral in another.
Anyone who has never lied may have a moral right to rebuke a liar but what if the person that has never
lied fornicated?
Does a thief have the right to condemn an adulterer? Is it ok for a woman that is not married yet sleep
with several men including married men to point to morals when things did not go her way?
The bible says “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God”. The operating word here is ALL,
everyone without exception.
I am not preaching, I am not qualified to do that by any means but I do like to point out BS when I smell
one.
There are no excuses or apology, I am not, by any means, an angel nor do I expect anyone to be.
There are things that I have done that I am not proud of in terms of morals but when things do not go
my way I move on, I don’t try to judge anyone for the bible also said you will be judged with the yardstick
you use in judging others.
I am not even trying to justify a position but as they say in law, it does not lie in the mouth of one criminal
to call another a criminal just as it does not lie in the mouth of one morally bankrupt person to point a
finger at another morally bankrupt person.
People, especially religious fanatics, like to believe that they are at least better than some others, but
are you really?
There’s a saying that all is fair in love and war because the primary objective of both is to win, selfishly if
that’s what is required.
I am not trying to convince anyone that guys that took their wives have done anything good or that ladies
that took their husbands fair better when it comes to morals, I am saying that given the same scenario
you might do exactly the same thing if it will make you happy and if you fancy yourself as not that kind of
a person, then what about the kind of person you are? If we look close enough everyone has tons of
skeletons in his/her cupboard.
When casting that stone, remember that ALL have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Maybe
we will change and strive to be a better person but that will not still remove the fact that we are all
sinners.
